EV charger grant for renters and flat owners

If you rent your home or own and live in a flat, you may be able to get up to £500 towards an EV charger before installation. The key tests are parking, permissions, vehicle eligibility and using the right installer.

Short answer: GOV.UK says eligible renters and flat owners can get 75% off the cost of buying and installing an EV chargepoint socket, capped at £500. You must apply before the charger is installed.

Common mistakes

  • Using a charger or installer that is not eligible for the scheme.
  • Missing freeholder or managing-agent permission for flat parking spaces.

FAQs

Can renters apply without landlord permission?

No. If the work affects the property or parking area, get written permission before applying.

Can flat owners apply if the parking bay is in a shared car park?

Possibly, if the space is private and linked to your property. You may still need freeholder or management company permission.

Can I claim if I already installed the charger?

No. The grant cannot normally be backdated after installation.
