On-street EV charger grant: up to £500

If you do not have a driveway, this grant can help with an EV chargepoint when you install an approved cross-pavement charging solution. The council-permission step is the make-or-break point.

Short answer: The on-street grant supports households without private off-street parking. GOV.UK's Find a Grant service currently lists up to £500, or 75% of eligible costs, for the chargepoint socket when paired with a permanent cross-pavement solution.

Who this grant is for

RequirementWhat to check
No drivewayYou do not have private and exclusive off-street parking such as a driveway, garage or private residential car park.
On-street parkingYou have adequate on-street parking near your property.
Cross-pavement solutionYou will install a permanent cable channel or similar approved solution, not a temporary cable mat.
PermissionsYou have local highways authority consent and any needed planning permission.
VehicleYou own or are responsible for an eligible electric vehicle.

Why permission matters

On-street charging involves public footway safety. Councils need to approve the cross-pavement charging solution before work starts, and some streets will not be suitable because of footway width, parking layout, utility constraints or local policy.

How to apply

  1. Confirm that you do not have private off-street parking.
  2. Speak to your council or highways authority about cross-pavement charging consent.
  3. Get a quote from an OZEV-approved installer.
  4. Apply before installing the chargepoint or cable channel.
  5. Install only once the right permissions and grant route are confirmed.

Costs to budget for

The grant helps with eligible chargepoint purchase and installation costs. You may still need to budget for survey work, highways consent, extra cable runs, and the cross-pavement channel itself if those are not fully covered.

When this is not the right route

  • You have a driveway, garage or private car park space.
  • Your council will not permit a cross-pavement solution.
  • You need to run a loose cable across the pavement using a temporary mat.
  • You already installed the chargepoint before applying.

FAQs

Does the grant reserve a parking space outside my home?

No. The grant does not create a private on-street parking bay. You still need to park close enough to use the approved charging solution.

Can I use a cable cover?

No. The grant is aimed at permanent cross-pavement charging solutions, not temporary covers or mats.

What if I rent my home?

You may still be able to apply, but you will need the relevant property permissions as well as highways consent.
