Almost Every Homeowner Qualifies
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is one of the most accessible government grants available. Unlike ECO4, there's no means testing — you don't need to be on benefits. If you own a home in England or Wales and have a valid EPC, you're likely eligible for £7,500 towards a heat pump.
BUS Eligibility Requirements
- You must own the property (homeowners only — not available for tenants)
- Property must be in England or Wales (Scotland has separate schemes)
- You need a valid EPC (any rating — unlike ECO4, there's no minimum)
- No loft insulation requirement removed — as of 2025, the previous insulation prerequisite was dropped
- Property must not be a new build
What Does BUS Cover?
The grant provides:
- £7,500 towards an air source heat pump
- £7,500 towards a ground source heat pump
- £5,000 towards a biomass boiler (rural properties only)
After the grant, a typical air source heat pump costs £2,500-£5,000 out of pocket (total installed cost £10,000-£12,500 minus £7,500 grant).
How to Apply
- Get an EPC — if you don't have one, order through gov.uk (costs £60-120)
- Find an MCS-certified installer — only MCS installers can apply for BUS on your behalf
- Get a quote — the installer surveys your home and provides a quote
- Installer applies for the voucher — they handle the BUS application
- Installation — once approved, the heat pump is installed (typically 2-3 days)
- You pay the difference — total cost minus £7,500 grant
Can I Combine BUS With Other Grants?
Yes! The smart move is to get free insulation through ECO4 first, then apply for BUS. A well-insulated home runs more efficiently on a heat pump, saving you even more.
How Long Does BUS Last?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has been extended to March 2028. Budget is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Is a Heat Pump Right for My Home?
Heat pumps work best in well-insulated homes. If your home has good insulation, a heat pump can cut heating costs by 30-50% compared to gas. They're especially beneficial if you have or plan to get solar panels — free electricity = free heating.
